Women experiencing menopausal symptoms are often loath to admit it\u2014and that turns out to be an issue for the workplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consider these statistics:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>An estimated <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC3820128\/#:~:text=It%20is%20estimated%20that%20there,women%20reach%20menopause%20every%20day.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">6,000 American women<\/a> reach menopause every day, with some women starting to experience symptoms as early as their mid-thirties.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The mean age for menopause is around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealth.gov\/menopause\/menopause-basics#:~:text=Menopause%20happens%20when%20you%20have,usually%20between%2045%20and%2058.&amp;text=One%20way%20to%20tell%20when,your%20mother%20went%20through%20it.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">52 years<\/a>, but symptoms can last up to a decade.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>61 million women over age 50 are in the U.S. workforce, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2020\/02\/is-menopause-a-taboo-in-your-organization\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Harvard Business Review.<\/em><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cipd.org\/en\/about\/press-releases\/menopause-at-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">59%<\/a> of women experiencing menopause report having missed work due to menopausal symptoms.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hbs.edu\/healthcare\/blog\/post\/women-work-and-the-m-word\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">One in five<\/a> women have considered leaving their jobs because of their symptoms.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A <a href=\"https:\/\/newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org\/discussion\/mayo-clinic-study-puts-price-tag-on-cost-of-menopause-symptoms-for-women-in-the-workplace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recent Mayo Clinic study<\/a> estimates that $1.8 billion in work time is lost each year due to menopausal symptoms, and symptoms cost $26.6 billion annually when medical expenses are considered.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As you can see, menopause care and support is an important consideration when supporting a multigenerational workforce. Yet women often struggle with where to turn as they begin experiencing the symptoms of menopause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some symptoms are expected, such as the irregular periods leading up to the <a href=\"https:\/\/progyny.com\/education\/menopause\/menopause-frequently-asked-questions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">12 months of no menstruation that define menopause.<\/a> Hot flashes and night sweats are the most well-known symptoms. But some of the other symptoms, such as memory lapses, difficulty concentrating, and mood changes, may be less expected\u2014and especially concerning and difficult for a woman in the workplace to talk about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unfortunately, primary care physicians and even ob-gyns are not always trained in, or comfortable with, treating menopausal patients.
