We\u2019ll talk about what&nbsp;frozen embryo transfer&nbsp;involves, and why someone may choose this&nbsp;option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Embryo creation and embryo transfer in IVF<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During&nbsp;IVF,&nbsp;eggs are retrieved and fertilized with sperm&nbsp;in a&nbsp;lab to create embryos. Embryos can also be created from eggs that were previously frozen,&nbsp;thawed,&nbsp;and fertilized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal is to create multiple embryos, but sometimes only one (or none)&nbsp;develops.&nbsp;If embryos form, they may be&nbsp;transferred to the uterus of the person carrying the pregnancy&nbsp;one of two ways:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Fresh embryo transfer<\/strong>&nbsp;is&nbsp;done just a few days after&nbsp;creating&nbsp;the embryo.&nbsp;If a fresh transfer is done, the other embryos are often still frozen for&nbsp;future use&nbsp;(if multiple were created).&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Frozen embryo transfer<\/strong>\u00a0uses\u00a0an embryo that was created in a prior cycle, frozen, and thawed.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most\u00a0embryo transfers in the United States are frozen transfers. Let&#8217;s walk through\u00a0the benefits and\u00a0what\u2019s\u00a0involved.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Benefits of frozen embryo transfer&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A frozen embryo transfer has several benefits:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Timing&nbsp;and flexibility:&nbsp;<\/strong>Freezing embryos allows&nbsp;you to&nbsp;transfer&nbsp;the embryo at the optimal time for your uterus and hormones.&nbsp;It\u2019s&nbsp;also helpful if you need to delay the transfer for medical reasons or genetic testing.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Pregnancy\u00a0rates:<\/strong>\u00a0Some studies suggest that frozen embryo transfers may have slightly higher success rates\u00a0than fresh embryo transfers because the uterine lining is better prepared.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Multiple&nbsp;attempts:<\/strong>&nbsp;If you have more than one frozen embryo, you can try again without repeating a full IVF cycle.&nbsp;This can be cost-effective and less physically demanding.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Preimplantation\u00a0genetic\u00a0testing\u00a0(PGT)<\/strong>:\u00a0A frozen embryo transfer allows you to do PGT,\u00a0which can help select\u00a0the most appropriate embryo for transfer.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Single&nbsp;embryo&nbsp;transfer<\/strong>:&nbsp;A&nbsp;single embryo&nbsp;transfer is almost always recommended. This reduces the risk of multiple gestation (twins or more), which promotes a safer and healthier&nbsp;pregnancy and delivery.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Reduced risk:<\/strong>&nbsp;Frozen embryo transfer reduces the risk of&nbsp;a rare complication called ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Fertility preservation:<\/strong>&nbsp;People facing medical treatments that affect fertility (like chemotherapy) or who choose to delay family building may have the opportunity&nbsp;to&nbsp;freeze&nbsp;embryos for the future.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How frozen embryo transfer is done&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s&nbsp;important to follow a healthy lifestyle in the days and weeks leading up to an embryo transfer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To prepare your uterus, your doctor will recommend&nbsp;either&nbsp;a&nbsp;<strong>natural cycle <\/strong>(which doesn\u2019t&nbsp;use medicine)&nbsp;or a&nbsp;<strong>programmed cycle <\/strong>(which uses medicine to&nbsp;suppress ovulation and prepares your uterine lining).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The procedure is usually done while you&#8217;re awake, and it is fairly quick. The embryo is placed in a special catheter (tube) and guided through the cervix to the uterus, using\u00a0an ultrasound for accurate placement.
