The first one we understood that\u00a0it is\u00a0normal, it\u00a0happens,\u00a0and we should try again and not worry about it.\u00a0Then another miscarriage\u00a0happened, following that miscarriage\u00a0another\u00a0happened\u00a0and\u00a0then\u00a0another.\u00a0I\u00a0realized and\u00a0knew this\u00a0was not\u00a0normal, something is going on.\u00a0Our doctor at the time decided to send us to a fertility specialist\u00a0and we\u00a0started talking from there about the miscarriages. Of course, like many other women, I would blame myself\u00a0and\u00a0my husband would blame himself. We\u00a0had gotten tested, and everything was fine on\u00a0both of our ends.\u00a0I kept asking myself\u00a0\u201cWhat is going on\u201d? We had\u00a0a multitude of\u00a0tests\u00a0including genealogy\u00a0testing\u00a0but\u00a0nothing really came back to give us any answer that we\u00a0were\u00a0always looking for.\u00a0We believed that\u00a0if we could just find out what the problem is we\u00a0could\u00a0fix it.\u00a0When everything just kept coming\u00a0back, we ended up with\u00a0more questions and no answers.\u00a0We just began to get\u00a0really hopeless.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{"201341983":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b>Confusion\u00a0Turns to Anger<\/b>\r\n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">5:50 \u2013 6:54<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{"201341983":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":240}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Keia\u00a0Jones-Baldwin:<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0It became very, very hard. I started to think that my husband is not going to\u00a0stay,\u00a0and he wants more children. I\u00a0did not\u00a0see another option. I became very depressed and bitter to the point where I really\u00a0did not\u00a0think that we were going to make it\u00a0and it was\u00a0just\u00a0the way that I was feeling.\u00a0I started\u00a0really pushing my feelings\u00a0off on\u00a0to my husband, despite what\u00a0he was\u00a0saying. He would always say how\u00a0it is\u00a0okay\u00a0and he told me he loved\u00a0me,\u00a0and\u00a0we\u00a0were\u00a0going to\u00a0get through this. In my mind, I\u00a0did not hear\u00a0that I was just\u00a0angry,\u00a0and, in a way,\u00a0I wanted him to be upset, and I wanted him to be angry, like I was, and it just did not equate that way for him.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{"201341983":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b>Rock Bottom<\/b>\r\n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">9:18 \u2013 10:38<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{"201341983":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":240}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Keia\u00a0Jones-Baldwin<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">:\u00a0A friend of ours had\u00a0offered\u00a0to talk to the doctor and move forward with surrogacy for us and we were so excited. When we got to the\u00a0process,\u00a0she found out she was pregnant. After that\u00a0I\u00a0felt\u00a0drained,\u00a0and\u00a0I felt like\u00a0I'm\u00a0just not meant to have any more children. This is when\u00a0I\u00a0hit rock bottom. I had experienced the miscarriages, the failed IVF attempts, and now the failed surrogacy.\u00a0I am\u00a0done. I\u00a0did not\u00a0want to give up and say those words\u00a0for\u00a0so long, because I\u00a0felt\u00a0like I had to keep trying, because my husband did not have any biological children. But my body\u00a0and\u00a0my mind\u00a0were done.\u00a0I was just\u00a0broken, and I needed to distance myself from all of it.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{"201341983":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b>An Awful Misconception<\/b>\r\n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">20:01 \u2013 20:52<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{"201341983":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":240}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Keia\u00a0Jones-Baldwin:<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0My husband and I were the only African American family with a\u00a0White child at the time in our fostering class, but there are many Caucasian families with African American children. I was telling a story about us going to Tennessee, and\u00a0a\u00a0photographer who was taking pictures\u00a0thought that we\u00a0kidnapped our son. Everyone in the class was mortified when hearing this story and\u00a0I\u00a0was confused.\u00a0I thought that we\u00a0as a class\u00a0dealt with the same\u00a0issues,\u00a0so\u00a0it\u00a0did not\u00a0really matter. If you were a\u00a0White family with\u00a0Black or\u00a0Brown children or\u00a0Black family with\u00a0White\u00a0children,\u00a0it is\u00a0transracial adoption. I\u00a0thought that we\u00a0all dealt\u00a0with the same things\u00a0but\u00a0everyone in the room\u00a0expressed how awful that situation was for us. Keia and Richard agreed and upon arriving to the hospital to do skin to skin with the premature newborn, they learned he was a White child. Were they shocked? Yes, for about 2.5 seconds and then Keia laid him on her chest for skin to skin and the rest is history!
