But\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">here's<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0the thing for the early part of that journey, Tara actually did have coverage for fertility treatment. And she knew it was somewhat rare, and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">at first\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">it felt like a lot of coverage. She had\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">what's<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0called a limited dollar max benefit, which just means that you'll be reimbursed for a certain number of dollars for different types of treatment, and Tara had $20,000 worth of that kind of coverage. $20,000 seem like a lot of money. And in real terms, it is a lot of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">money. I guess I was naive in the beginning to what treatment could possibly be coming around the corner<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0such as IVF, and the impact and cost that would have.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">So,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0I did have the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">$<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">20,000<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">h<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">owever, two years after we started treatment, my place\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">work switched insurance companies, and I lost that benefit. And lo and behold, there w<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ere\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">several others in my small rural office going through this as well. And they lost that benefit, too.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">I think my place of work has switched insurance plans and companies three times in seven years<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, so<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">you have it, you\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">don't<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0have it, you have it. I always say that the price of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">bread\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">and milk goes up, so does the price of your medical expenses<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0yet that\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">$<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">20,000 for anybody who has it across the country has never changed.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">I've<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0heard\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">$<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">5<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">000<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">$<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">10,000<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">$<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">20,000, you know, if there is\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">any\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">coverage. So, after the completion of my treatment, we were still\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">$<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">25<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,000<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">#<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">30,000, I had to quit counting<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. I rounded it to $<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">30,000 in debt above having that $20,000 coverage.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{"201341983":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b>Talking to Insurance Companies<\/b><\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{"201341983":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":259}\">\r\n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">19:17<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">-\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">20<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">:<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">47<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{"201341983":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":259}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Tara Brandner<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">:<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">If 2019 did anything, it taught me how to come back and what to do better next time. So naturally, I had formed this nonprofit, and part of what I did through Everlasting Hope was start working with insurance companies in the background early on. For about the last year,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">I've<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0had a monthly phone call that has turned into weekly with different departments with the two main insurance companies in North Dakota. And\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">it's<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0really educating them.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">O<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ne of them\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">in particular\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">said<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, \u2018<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">y<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ou know what, Tara, thanks for bringing this forward. We had no idea\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">o<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ur members needed this. We don't know what we don't know.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2019<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0Whereas the other insurance company was trying to just say,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2018<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">okay, we met with you.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2019<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0And this<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">actually all<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0came from a close working relationship I had formed with the state insurance commissioner during the 2019 session<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">W<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">e have had several meetings with him\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">in regards to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0how this mandate works, or what we can do here<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0some other avenues we could possibly take to change the coverage for infertility in North Dakota.
