It's so profound and unjust in terms of inequalities and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">car<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">e<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">or\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">B<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">lack communities,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0we can clearly see that within the COVID-19\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">pandemic<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. We have higher rates of maternal death<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0infant mortality than our\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">W<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">hite counterparts<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">nd then you have issues such as lack of access to care,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0pervasive stereotypes about\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">B<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">lack and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">B<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">rown people<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. F<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">or example,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0our<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0ability to handle pain not being listened to. In a study from\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">University of Michigan, that was called\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">S<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ilent<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">I<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">nfertile, it highlights infertility in t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">hat<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0we are clear that we have infertility issues that\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">B<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">lack wom<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">e<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">as\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Dr. Isaiah Harris mentioned<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0that we\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">suffer from<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">more infertility issues\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">than\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">our\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">W<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">hite counterparts. However, the research and the focus in terms of infertility does not consider our perspective<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">W<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">e are left out in the research and what we have access to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0so there's just a stark imbalance in between research access studying<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0B<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">lack women and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">B<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">lack families in terms of infertility and what's available to us. So Right now, we need to catch up to what the actual statistics say so that we can address the science, the needs, and the unique concerns of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">B<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">lack women.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{"201341983":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b>Progyny Member Point of View<\/b><\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{"201341983":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":259}\">\r\n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">1<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">6:<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">35<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">-<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">18<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">:<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">41<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{"201341983":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":259}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Lissa Kline<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">:<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">What are some health conditions<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0specifically related to fertility, which are more prevalent in this community that have an impact on<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">women's infertility?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{"201341983":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Dr. Isiah Harris:<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0I want to piggyback off one thing that Dr. Kanika Harris mentioned in her last response, which is that\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ccess is not just about Black women going and showing up for care, but it's also about them getting referrals for care,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0once they're there, being believed and having their information taken seriously. And<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">one of the examples that for me really stood out,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">I think a lot of people were<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">moved\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">by\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">the video, but I thought equally jarring, the situation that happened to Dr. Susan Moore<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">S<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">he\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">as<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0someone who\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">was\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">a physician herself was seeking care for COVID<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, she<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0was seeking pain relief for her ailments. And within a situation where she just did not feel believed\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">was not believed<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0she ultimately passed away. And this is someone who has a heavy understanding of complicated medical terminology. And\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">so,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0I think that a lot of times, it does come down to an access issue. And there are definitely different ways that access<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">challenges can manifest. But beyond that, there truly are some inherent epidemiologic and medical differences that\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">B<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">lack women face that pose a greater risk to their reproductive health. And that includes things like being exposed to sexually transmitted infections that can result in things like tubal factor infertility. Things like<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0even though the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">B<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">lack women who do utilize IVF services and may have very similar characteristics coming into treatment cycles have a lower pregnancy rates and lower or higher miscarriage rates than other women do. And one of the probably the most prevalent kind of physical difference that we often identify for\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">B<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">lack women is the prevalence of fibroids<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">I<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">n the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">B<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">lack population<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0fibroids can a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ffect\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">bout 50% of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">B<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">lack women<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{"201341983":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b>It's Not Race, It\u2019s Racism<\/b><\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{"201341983":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":259}\">\r\n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">31:44<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">-\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">33<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">:3<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">8<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{"201341983":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":240}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Lissa Kline<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">:<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">I'm curious to know, or to have you tell us what the Black Women's Health Imperative is doing to try to change the conversations and specifically a recent study, you all produce, which I thought was\u00a0really powerful, called what healthy black women can teach us about health. There's nothing so different about your lifestyle habits compared to other races that will create these disparities that we experience on so many levels, from<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">diabetes, to heart disease to all these things. When you look at\u00a0all of\u00a0the chronic conditions that\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">B<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">lack women experience, underlying all of that is not race, but it's racism<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">W<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">e're go<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ing\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">say that<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">again, it's not race, but it's racism. And that's an important first step to kind of shift the narrative. Because when you hear\u00a0over and over again\u00a0about every health crisis<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0\u2013 B<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">lack\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">women are two to three times more likely to have<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0this<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Black women are more likely to die from\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">that<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0\u2013<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">it<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">can be daunting. And if you really don't understand and change the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">narrative and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0focus on the structural issues in society that are causing these disparities, and start the conversation from there, then you just continue to perpetuate stereotypes, especially when it comes to health behaviors and beliefs about what the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">B<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">lack community does and what\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">B<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">lack people do.
