They do this through investments and evidence-based strategy delivering both new programs and advocacy programs promoting policies. It's also the only national organization that focuses on the physical, mental<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and financial health of the 21\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">+\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">million\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">B<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">lack wom<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">e<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">n living in the United States. We are dealing with implicit bias, we're dealing with narratives about race that are generations old, that are, frankly very dangerous, that make it very dangerous to be a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">B<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">lack woman in the healthcare system in the United States right now.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{"201341983":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b>Implicit Bias in Healthcare<\/b>\r\n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">5:19<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">-<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">8:06<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{"201341983":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":240}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Dr. Kanika Harris:<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0I think once I started becoming a mom...it became a very scary reality for me. For example, giving birth in a hospital for\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">B<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">lack wom<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">e<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">n right now in the US is not only scary, but life threatening. If you get cancer, you're 40% more likely to die than a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">W<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">hite woman. Same similar statistics, if you have heart disease, you're more likely to die than a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">W<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">hite woman<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. D<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">octors are less likely to believe you if you say you're in pain and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">need\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">medication<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Y<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">our stereotype is\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">that\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">you'll get addicted to this drug, or you're asking because you want to be on this drug. And it's not really because you're in pain. I remember my mom being extremely sick, she was in the hospital<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">she called me in the middle of the night to say her IV drip was burning her. I had never experienced my mom in that extreme vulnerable place calling me because she didn't know what to do\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">o one\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">was listening to her.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">S<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">he said it felt like this IV was like fire through her veins<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. M<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">y mom, someone who can stand up for herself<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0very articulate, very well educated, and to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">hear her in th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">is vulnerable place where she's alone and can't get help is really scary. And that's the reality\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0the healthcare system<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{"201341983":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>How Doctors Should Act<\/strong><\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{"201341983":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":259}\">\r\n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">14:<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">08<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">-15:<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">53<\/span>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Dan Bulger:\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Dr. Harris just said something that we say quite a bit here,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2018<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">be your own advocate.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u2019<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0But of course, sometimes that's asking a lot. It can't<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, w<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ell, it shouldn't anyway, always fall on the patient to advocate for themselves. We have doctors to guide us. That's their function and we can't expect every patient to understand enough to truly advocate for themselves. Some of this has to fall on doctors.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">So<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0we asked Dr. Harris what she would say to a roomful of physicians t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">oday.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{"201341983":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Dr. Kanika Harris:<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">When Black women walk into your office, they are coming with a lot. They are hoping that you see them for who they really are. They are hoping that when they walk into that office, you don't give them a litany of stereotypes or statistics about Black women, their reproductive systems, what's possible, what's not possible. They hope that you just take them as a separate entity<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0that\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">you\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">are looking at them as they are. They're hoping you don't give them these old narratives and tropes about black\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">genes\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">being inferior, and somehow turn that into the narrative of where they are right now with their fertility.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">W<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">e ask<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0that<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0you see whatever little glimmer of hope that they have in the situation they're in<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0that you fully support and see them\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">have compassion for them<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Le<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">t them ask all the questions that they need to ask.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">G<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ive them space<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.
