And while the film was initially meant to be a short film targeting black women of reproductive age, the target audience grew to include a completely different demographic.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{"201341983":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":240}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Chi<\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">quita Lockley<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">: Once I realized the film was going to be bigger,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">I thought we had to use this to also educate doctors.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">On<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ce we started looking at maternal mortality, that black women have a 243% maternal mortality rate, like we died three times more often than a white woman\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">who's<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0having a baby<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, we realized t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">hat is a doctor's issue.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{"201341983":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":240}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Dan Bulger<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">: T<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">hat statistic that black women die three to four times more often than white women while giving birth is absolutely jarring. But <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">it's<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0not the only place where our health care system comes up significantly short for black women. And this film does a very good job of talking about many of the issues that need to be corrected.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{"201341983":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":240}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Chiquita Lockley:<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">There are several reasons why a woman may not be able to have a baby or have some<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">problems conceiving<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0one of the biggest issues\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">in t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">he black community is fibroids. 80% of black women will have fibroids by the age of 50. That number is astronomical. And just to be clear<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">70% for white women<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0will also have fibroids<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, so\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">there's<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> not a huge gap. I'm just from living in, in this country living in the Western world, where when you look\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">in a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0magazine or at a TV show<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, we're not humanized in the same way, and traditionally, we have not been humanized the same way.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">So<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0you could have a physician who is not a racist, but there's an implicit bias there.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{"201341983":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":240}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span data-contrast=\"none\">An example of this is Serena Williams. She has millions of <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">do<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">l<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">lars,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">she has tons of followers on social media \u2013 she is a woman of influence!<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0And when she had her baby, she was\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">clotting<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, which was something that\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">hadn\u2019t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0happened to her before.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">So,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0she tells the doctors and nurses she is\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">clotting<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and could\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">possibly<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0die, and they\u2019re like \u201cno, you\u2019re okay\u201d.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0But she was\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">right<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and they eventually ran the tests and realized\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">she was right.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{"201341983":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":240}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span data-contrast=\"none\">So,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0if this happening to a woman with such influence and wealth, what is happening to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">a regular woman?<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0It means<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0it doesn\u2019t matter how much money you have, it doesn\u2019t matter how much education you have, it doesn\u2019t matter who you know, your skin is black and that\u2019s what they\u2019re going to see first, and you\u2019re going to be treated horribly many times<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, and that is how we get to a 243% maternal mortality rate.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{"201341983":0,"335559739":160,"335559740":240}\">\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><b>Black Lives Matter<\/b><b>. Black Fertility Matters.
