Employers\u00a0have had to adjust to virtual environments, prepare for return to work, and manage increasing health care costs. With employees more concerned than ever about their health and financial well-being, open enrollment poses a unique opportunity for employers to engage with their employees. Typically, employees spend <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrdive.com\/news\/on-average-employees-spend-18-minutes-enrolling-in-benefits\/555041\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">only\u00a018 minutes enrolling in their benefits<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aflac.com\/business\/resources\/aflac-workforces-report\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">93%<\/a> automatically\u202fdefault to\u00a0last year\u2019s election.\u00a0But in a\u00a0recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jellyvision.com\/survey-report\/young-people-are-paying-more-attention-to-their-benefits-covid19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">survey <\/a>from Jellyvision, a benefit navigation platform, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jellyvision.com\/survey-report\/young-people-are-paying-more-attention-to-their-benefits-covid19\/\">66%\u00a0of employees<\/a> reported that they\u00a0will be paying more attention to their benefits\u00a0this year.<\/p>\n<p>Organizations\u00a0should take advantage\u00a0of the added\u00a0employee\u00a0attention and execute a strong\u00a0internal benefits\u00a0communications plan to\u00a0ensure employees elect the\u00a0most impactful and cost-effective benefits for the upcoming year.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>How will benefits change?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Given we are still facing so many unknowns, employers are facing tough decisions on how to allocate budgets and choose which health plans and benefits programs to offer.\u00a0According to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.shrm.org\/resourcesandtools\/hr-topics\/benefits\/pages\/planning-2021-benefits-changes-for-the-covid-19-era.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mercer Study<\/a>,\u00a0some of the most common changes\u00a0include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Expanding\u202f virtual or telehealth programs<\/li>\n<li>Enhancing\u202f mental health support<\/li>\n<li>Increasing\u202f cost-sharing for plan expenses\u202fsuch as deductibles, premiums or co-payments<\/li>\n<li>Adding or expanding\u202fvoluntary benefits<\/li>\n<li>Augmenting\u202f services for managing high-cost claims, including specialty pharmacy claims<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>Targeted Communications Strategy\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Your benefit strategy is not one size fits all so your communications shouldn&#8217;t be either. Whichever virtual options you choose, make sure they&#8217;re <a href=\"https:\/\/progyny.com\/blog\/fertility-in-the-workplace\/open-enrollment-communicating-your-benefit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>targeted<\/em><\/a> and involve multiple modes of communication so employees understand the benefits most relevant to them. For example, you may have employees who would rather seek information via email or others who would prefer a more interactive approach with a virtual platform. Other examples include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Virtual \u201coffice hours\u201d for employees to drop in and ask questions<\/li>\n<li>Providing information or webinars on benefits for your LGBTQ+ employees<\/li>\n<li>Notifying your recent grad employees of a student loan repayment benefit<\/li>\n<li>Notifying parent-support groups of new childcare or FSA benefits<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4><strong>The New Virtual Environment\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Even events that were defined by in-person, face-to-face interactions,\u00a0have now\u00a0fully pivoted to an online format. Open-enrollment\u00a0fairs are\u00a0no exception.\u00a0To mimic an in-person\u00a0event,\u00a0some employers are using an external\u00a0virtual\u00a0platform\u00a0that looks just like a benefit fair. Others are\u00a0offering a catalogue of webinars and virtual discussions where you can learn about your benefit offerings.
