Women will face the majority of treatment, but we can forget that it&#8217;s a journey that impacts both partners.<\/p>\n<p>During <a href=\"https:\/\/minorityhealth.hhs.gov\/omh\/content.aspx?ID=10238&amp;lvl=2&amp;lvlid=12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Men\u2019s Health Month<\/a>, we\u2019re sharing the facts you need to know about male infertility.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Here\u2019s what you need to know about\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/opa\/reproductive-health\/fact-sheets\/male-infertility\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>male infertility<\/strong><\/a><strong>:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/fastats\/infertility.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">1 in 8 couples<\/a> will be impacted by infertility<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nichd.nih.gov\/news\/resources\/links\/infographics\/Pages\/infertility.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Male factors cause 1\/3 of these cases<\/a>, 1\/3 are female factors, and the remaining are a combination<\/li>\n<li>9% of men, 25-44 years old, have seen a doctor about infertility<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Though cause can vary, these factors can increase the likelihood of male infertility:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Age<\/li>\n<li>Smoking<\/li>\n<li>Heavy alcohol and drug use<\/li>\n<li>Diabetes<\/li>\n<li>Environmental toxins<\/li>\n<li>Cancer treatments<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>The Emotional Impact<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Despite the prevalence of infertility \u2013 and the shared emotional impact on a couple \u2013 male infertility can still be a taboo subject. Men can also face a difficult emotional journey \u2013 particularly if their partner has to go through treatment because of their diagnosis.<\/p>\n<p>In a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/5492615\/male-infertility-taboo-society-shame\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2017 survey<\/a>, researchers asked men how infertility impacted their lives. 93% said it had a negative impact on their well-being and self-esteem. However, almost 40% didn\u2019t seek support.<\/p>\n<p>Matt Mira, a TV writer and podcast host, who along with his wife Doree Sharfir, was featured on our podcast,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/progyny.com\/podcast\/episode-11\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">This is Infertility.<\/a>\u00a0They wanted an outlet to share their experience with male infertility and IVF.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s always the guilt that I was feeling of not having to do anything,\u201d Matt said. They started their\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/eggcellentadventure.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">own podcast<\/a> and were shocked by how many people stepped forward to share their own experiences.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>How Employers Can Help<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Without the proper support, the stress can have an effect on the workplace.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/progyny.com\/blog\/fertility-in-the-workplace\/need-for-comprehensive-care-benefits-strategy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Research shows that employees<\/a> rank infertility as more stressful than unemployment and divorce.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, about one-third of the calls Progyny\u2019s Patient Care Advocates (PCAs) receive are specifically for the male partner.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve made major progress to destigmatize infertility. However, it&#8217;s crucial that employers provide fertility benefits that offer the clinical and emotional support employees need to start a family.<\/p>\n<p>Knowledge is power. Educated and supported members make better, informed treatment decisions.
