Why is the treatment for infertility treated differently when we are all paying the same premium?\u201d Karin Ajmani, president of Progyny, asked during Progyny&#8217;s recent\u00a0webinar on the landscape of <a href=\"https:\/\/progyny.com\/education\/lgbtq-family-building\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">LGBTQ family building<\/a>. While <a href=\"https:\/\/progyny.com\/blog\/fertility-in-the-workplace\/massmutual-expanding-view-of-family-includes-new-fertility-benefits\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">there are more companies stepping up<\/a>\u00a0and supporting equitable fertility and family building benefits, LGBTQ individuals and couples still face restrictive policies and barriers to the services they need \u2013 even though they are paying the same premiums.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.familyequality.org\/resources\/lgbtq-family-building-survey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Family Equality Council\u2019s recent LGBTQ Family Building Survey<\/a>, 63% of LGBTQ millennials (approximately 3.8 million people) are planning on starting a family in the coming years. The majority will look to <a href=\"https:\/\/progyny.com\/education\/lgbtq-family-building\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">foster care, adoption, and assisted reproductive technology (ART)<\/a>\u00a0to build their families. They\u2019re rightfully demanding policies and benefits (for options like adoption, <a href=\"https:\/\/progyny.com\/education\/surrogacy-adoption\/what-is-surrogacy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">surrogacy<\/a>, fertility treatment, etc) that are sensitive and inclusive of the many paths to parenthood.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Conventional fertility benefits typically restrict access to same-sex couples by requiring pre-certification or a diagnosis of infertility (often hidden in the fine print). Ultimately, these one-size-fits-all requirements limit access to necessary treatment and fail to acknowledge the many paths to parenthood.
